Despite the severe financial crisis, KTM does not seem inclined to abandon its motorsport programs, even if it might be questioned whether these are superfluous expenses when hundreds of jobs are at stake.

The racing department is separate from KTM AG, which is mired in billions of euros of debt along with subsidiaries KTM F&E and KTM Components. Sponsors, particularly Red Bull, cover a significant portion of the budget.

Racing is considered essential for the brand’s image and marketing, as highlighted by consultant Heinz Kinigadner in an interview with SPEEDWEEK.com:

– Production and racing are particularly closely linked at KTM. Of course, we are now talking about jobs that will be lost. It’s an absolutely terrible time for employees. But in my opinion, KTM thrives on its image in motorsports.

The Austrian contrasted KTM with Honda to illustrate the importance of racing: ‘KTM is not like Honda, where there are cars, generators, and many other products besides motorcycles. Motorcycles are just a small part of Honda. But we don’t have anything else – we would be nothing without our image in racing!’.
