The global Formula 1 fraternity is mourning the loss of a unique character and an influential team chief, Eddie Jordan, who passed away at 76 in Cape Town last Thursday. Jordan’s long-standing companion and former F1 titan, Bernie Ecclestone, has paid tribute to the Irishman’s legendary persona, even though he has resolved not to attend Jordan’s funeral.

A prominent figure in the world of Formula 1, Jordan was known for his effervescent spirit, musical flair, and his relentless battle against bladder and prostate cancer, which later spread to his spine. His passing has left a profound void in the hearts of many, as his family noted, “EJ brought a wealth of charisma, energy, and Irish charm wherever he went. His absence leaves a tremendous gap, but he also leaves behind a multitude of delightful memories to cherish.”

Jordan, a genuine ‘rock and roll’ star of Formula 1, made his mark as the owner of Jordan Grand Prix for 15 years. The Irish team was celebrated for its grit and determination, often outperforming expectations under Jordan’s leadership, one of the sport’s most vibrant personalities.

During its tenure in Formula 1, Jordan Grand Prix claimed four victories and peaked at third place in the 1999 F1 World Championship. Jordan’s knack for scouting new talent was evident as he introduced the iconic Michael Schumacher to the grid. Despite facing challenges towards the end of his career, Jordan remained a fan favorite up until his retirement in 2004 when he sold his Formula 1 team. His witty insights as a pundit post-retirement further endeared him to fans.

Ecclestone, though, cherished Jordan not just as a fellow professional but as a close friend. “Eddie was a special guy, and I’m deeply saddened by his passing,” Ecclestone confided in Mail Sport. “You won’t find another team principal like him today. Eddie was irreplaceable in Formula 1.”

The bond between Ecclestone and Jordan was so strong that even when Benetton poached Schumacher from Jordan in the 1992 season, their trust remained unbroken. Ecclestone nostalgically recalled their all-night discussions, lauding Jordan’s down-to-earth approach and his negotiation skills, “He was fighting to retain his driver but was content if he received a few dollars in return for Michael’s departure. I would have given him a blank cheque as I trusted him completely.”

However, it’s Ecclestone’s decision to abstain from attending Jordan’s funeral that has caught attention. Ecclestone, known for his candid nature, was straightforward about his decision, “I won’t be attending his funeral. I don’t go to funerals. I may not even go to mine,” he quipped. “He certainly won’t be attending mine. So, it’s all fair. It always was with Eddie.”
