Subsequent to discussions with the FIA, McLaren made modifications to their rear wing, leading Norris to confidently assert that the current rear wing checks have nothing to do with McLaren.

In the lead-up to the Chinese Grand Prix, Norris, the reigning Australian GP champion, declared, “We don’t change anything, ours is fine. In fact, ours is probably too good, and we are probably not pushing the limits enough, honestly.” He further added that even if the technical directive had been applied last weekend, McLaren would still be in compliance. He opined that it seemed other teams were the focus of these regulations.

The FIA, meanwhile, confirmed that all teams cleared the compulsory flexi tests in Australia. However, video footage of the cars’ rear wings indicates there may be sufficient cause for more rigorous testing. An FIA spokesperson spoke to PlanetF1.com, elaborating on the new testing measures introduced between the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

The spokesperson revealed that the FIA had employed cameras during Free Practice Sessions at the Australian Grand Prix to monitor on-track deformations. The analysis of the rear wing deformations and static deflections measured in the FIA garage in Melbourne led to the conclusion that there was a need for tougher tests from the upcoming Chinese Grand Prix.

The spokesperson further clarified that starting from the forthcoming Grand Prix in Shanghai, the flexibility limit would be further tightened to 0.5mm. Given the short notice, a tolerance of 0.25mm will be added to this new limit. Teams were notified about this revised test early on Monday, March 17th.

The FIA also wished to emphasize that all cars tested during the Melbourne event complied with the requirements of Article 3.15.17. Hence, all vehicles that raced in Melbourne were deemed legal.

The severity of penalties led to concerns among drivers, especially those just beginning their careers. However, the FIA indicated that the punishments would be discretionary, taking into account factors such as the driver’s experience level and language proficiency.

Pierre Gasly, while acknowledging the need for professionalism, voiced concerns about the fines, calling them “harsh.” He pointed out the linguistic challenges faced by non-English speaking drivers, often leading to misunderstandings.

While the swearing saga seems to be reaching a compromise in Formula 1, it’s still a contentious issue in the World Rally Championship. However, GPDA director George Russell was optimistic, saying that the drivers now had “more clarity” than before, which was all they had asked for. In a sharp rejoinder to Red Bull’s senior advisor, Helmut Marko, erstwhile Formula 1 driver and now analyst, Martin Brundle, has suggested that Marko should focus more on his own drivers. This retort came in response to Marko’s critical evaluation of the batch of rookies starting their F1 journey in 2025.

Marko made his assessments during a segment on Red Bull’s in-house channel, Servus TV. Among the newbies, Alpine’s Jack Doohan and Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto bore the brunt of his criticism. Marko, discussing Doohan, a former Red Bull Junior, labeled him as a ‘C’ grade driver. He further fueled the fire by casting doubt on Doohan’s potential to last the season, amid ongoing speculation about his future and the presence of Alpine’s backup driver, Franco Colapinto.

Turning his attention to Bortoleto, who had previously bagged the Formula 3 and Formula 2 titles in consecutive seasons, earning Sauber’s interest, Marko assigned a ‘B’ grade. Despite being a protégé of two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso, he insinuated that the Brazilian speedster lacked “pure speed”.

Bortoleto, however, countered this critique by outpacing his esteemed teammate Nico Hulkenberg in his debut race. Brundle, witnessing Bortoleto’s performance, hinted at the emergence of a potential “star”. He lauded the young Brazilian’s maturity and success in F3 and F2, likening him to renowned drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, who have achieved similar feats.

When reminded of Marko’s ‘B-class driver’ remark about Bortoleto, Brundle replied with a firm “exactly”, before advising Marko to concentrate more on remarks about his own drivers.

Marko did offer some commentary about his own team’s drivers during the Grand Prix Sunday in Melbourne. Red Bull rookie Isack Hadjar had an unfortunate crash during the formation lap of his debut race with VCARB, Red Bull’s junior squad. The slippery Albert Park circuit, due to previous rains, contributed to the incident. A distraught Hadjar was comforted by Lewis Hamilton’s father, Anthony, in the paddock. Marko, however, was unimpressed by Hadjar’s emotional breakdown, labeling it as “a bit embarrassing”.

The race also witnessed mishaps involving Doohan and Bortoleto, along with Red Bull newcomer Liam Lawson, as rain wreaked havoc later on. Regardless of these developments, Brundle’s parting shot to Marko suggests that the Red Bull senior advisor’s critiques might be better served closer to home.
