Toprak Razgatlioglu set the pace on the second and final day of Superbike World Championship testing, which took place this Saturday. The second round of the season will be held at the Algarve circuit at the end of the month.

The ROKiT BMW rider was the only one to lap in the 1m39s range, posting a best time of 1m39.592s. Nicolò Bulega (Aruba.it Ducati), the current WSBK leader, finished second, 0.425s behind.

Alex Lowes (bimota by KRT) secured third place, while Michael van der Mark (ROKiT BMW) and Remy Gardner (GYTR GRT Yamaha) completed the top five. Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team/Ducati) finished sixth, already over a second off the pace.

Further down the standings, Álvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Ducati) ended the day in eighth place based on individual best lap times, just behind Andrea Locatelli (Pata Maxus Yamaha).

Riders from the Supersport World Championship also participated in the test. Among them, the fastest was Can Öncü (Yamaha bLU cRU EvanBros), setting a 1m43.623s lap to beat Lucas Mahias (GMT94 Yamaha) by 0.678s. The second World Supersport race at Phillip Island was marked by a historic moment: Tom Booth-Amos (PTR Triumph Factory Racing) achieved his first victory in the category, taking Triumph to the top of the podium for the second time in championship history.

The British rider entered the World Supersport winners’ list by triumphing in an intense and emotional race. Booth-Amos became only the fourth rider to win in both World Supersport and Supersport 300. Stefano Manzi (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing), who led much of the race, was eventually overtaken on Gardner straight, finishing second. Bo Bendsneyder (MV Agusta Reparto Corse), who had a complicated start and dropped to 13th position in the first lap, staged a remarkable recovery to secure third place on the podium.

Michael Rinaldi (GMT94 Yamaha) achieved a solid fourth place, demonstrating consistent pace throughout the race. His teammate, Lucas Mahias, also had a positive performance, finishing sixth. Between them was Jeremy Alcoba (Kawasaki Racing Team), who crossed the finish line in third position but was penalized by 6.78 seconds due to a pit lane infringement, dropping to fifth place.

Australian Oli Bayliss (PTR Triumph Factory Racing) treated the home crowd to a secure performance, finishing in seventh position. Xavi Cardelus (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) staged a good recovery after going off track to avoid an accident, finishing the race in eighth. Kaito Toba (PETRONAS MIE Honda Racing Team) was Honda’s best representative finishing ninth, while Ondrej Vostatek (WRP Racing), despite a 0.765-second penalty for an early pit lane exit, managed to close the top 10, with an advantage of more than 2.5 seconds over Luke Power (Motozoo Me Air Racing).

The race was also marked by several incidents, including an accident involving Valentin Debise (Renzi Corse) and Jaume Masia (Orelac Racing VerdNatura). The two riders were fighting for the top positions when, entering Turn 1, Masia touched Debise’s rear wheel, leading both to a dramatic crash. Debise suffered a right ankle fracture, while Masia emerged with only scrapes.

Marcel Schroetter (WRP Racing) took the lead after this incident but would crash at Turn 11 on the same lap, compromising any possibility of a good result. Xavi Cardelus was also affected by the accident, dropping to 14th position before recovering to eighth place. Can Oncu (Yamaha BLU CRU Evan Bros Racing) fought among the top five for much of the race, but a crash near the end threw him out of the points, finishing 16th.

With this achievement, Tom Booth-Amos enters Triumph and World Supersport history, establishing himself as one of the great promises of the season. The next round promises more excitement, with the main contenders trying to recover ground against the Brit and his team.

Thrilling action marked the start of the Supersport World Championship season as Stefano Manzi clinched victory in race 1 at Phillip Island, with the top three separated by just 0.480s.

Bo Bendsneyder (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) started from pole position but lost several places on the first lap. By the end of the lap, Can Öncü (Yamaha bLU cRU Evan Bros) was leading, followed by Lucas Mahias (GMT94 Yamaha) and Jaume Masiá (Orelac Racing Verdnatura/Ducati).

Manzi (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate) was in fifth, moving up to fourth on the next lap, overtaking Tom Booth-Amos (PTR Triumph).

The lead changed hands on lap three when Öncü was overtaken by Manzi and Masiá, with the Spanish rider briefly taking the lead. However, Manzi took control before the mandatory pit stops, which began on lap nine.

After the pit stops, the battle for victory remained intense. Manzi was still one of the main contenders and retook the lead on lap 12, only to be immediately passed by Masiá. He quickly fought back, while Marcel Schrötter (WRP Racing/Ducati) and Booth-Amos closed in.

In the final laps, the fight for victory became a four-way battle between Manzi, Masiá, Schrötter, and Booth-Amos. Manzi proved the most effective, gaining a slight margin on the last lap to secure the win by 0.322s. Booth-Amos finished second, with Schrötter taking third ahead of Bendsneyder. Öncü completed the top five, while Masiá was penalized by 3.510s for a pit lane violation, dropping to sixth. Without the penalty, he would have finished second, just 0.017s behind Manzi.

The second round of World Superbike (WorldSBK) pre-season testing brings the final opportunity for riders and teams to adjust their machines before the official start of the season in Australia. After two days of testing in Jerez, Spain, on January 22nd and 23rd, teams move 218 km west to the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portugal. With two days of testing scheduled and eight hours of track action per day, Portimão will be crucial for fine-tuning details before the first round at Phillip Island, less than a month away.

BMW: Razgatlioglu may start the season in Portimão

One of the big pre-season stories was the finger injury suffered by Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team). The current champion fractured his right index finger bone while training in the pre-season. Although he attended BMW’s launch in Berlin, the team hopes Toprak can return for at least one of the testing days in Portimão, avoiding starting the season with his first contact with the bike only during race week in Australia. Meanwhile, teammate Michael van der Mark has been the only one testing the new BMW M 1000 RR. Van der Mark stood out on the first day in Jerez, but a crash at turn 8 limited track time.

Yamaha: Adjustments and improvements on the way

After good results on the second wet testing day in Jerez, Yamaha Pata Maxus aims to improve the R1’s performance for 2025. The team hopes to test new components in Portimão. Remy Gardner (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) was the fastest Yamaha rider on track in dry testing, while Dominique Aegerter had his testing time reduced due to technical issues. Among rookies, Bahattin Sofuoglu achieved a solid 16th place, while Tito Rabat completed an impressive 99 laps on the first day.

Ducati: Strong pace and new developments

Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) was the fastest on the first day of testing in Jerez, with a lap of 1’38.731s. Alvaro Bautista, in turn, seeks to continue adapting to the redesigned Panigale V4 R and test a new exhaust system in Portimão. Danilo Petrucci, from Barni Spark Racing Team, showed consistency, while new teammate Yari Montella stood out on the second rainy day. Ducati thus presents several promising fronts for the season.

Honda: Lecuona and Zaidi at the starting line?

Honda HRC is betting on improvements to the CBR1000RR-R, especially with the testing of Öhlins suspensions. Xavi Vierge showed progress in Jerez, while the return of Iker Lecuona, absent due to injury, could mark the tests in Portimão. On the independent side, rookie Zaqhwan Zaidi hopes to make his debut, and Tarran Mackenzie will try to continue the development started in Jerez.

Bimota: Bassani leads the new machine

Axel Bassani impressed at the helm of the new Bimota KB998, finishing in the top 5 in Jerez. The rider believes there is still room for evolution, especially in tuning the bike’s rear. Alex Lowes, who also joins the Bimota team, hopes to solidify his competitive pace in Portimão, after a good season last year with Kawasaki.

Kawasaki: Gerloff shows potential

American rider Garrett Gerloff finished the first day of testing in Jerez with a time of 1’39.332s, using the SCQ tire. Kawasaki tested new components, including Brembo suspensions and brakes, with more developments expected in Portimão.

WorldSSP in Portimão: Adaptation and progress

In the World Supersport Championship, Phillip Oettl and Michael Ruben Rinaldi continue adapting to their new machines. Oettl, now with the Ducati Panigale V2, showed growing confidence, while Rinaldi, at the helm of a Yamaha R9, prepares for the transition from WorldSBK.

With the latest adjustments and technological innovations at stake, Portimão will be the ideal setting for defining strategies and consolidating competitive pace before the season starts in Australia. The countdown to 2025 is officially underway!

As in 2024, the World Superbike Championship and World Supersport Championship races at Phillip Island will adopt a flag-to-flag format with mandatory pit stops for tire changes.

The season’s opening round, set for February 21 to 23, takes place at a circuit known for its unique layout and challenging asphalt. As a precaution, the decision to implement this safety measure mirrors last year’s approach after the installation of new asphalt.

Following a detailed analysis, the FIM and Dorna have determined that rear tyres cannot exceed 11 laps in WSBK and 10 laps in WSSP. Consequently, the first and second WSBK races will comprise 20 laps, with riders allocated two additional sets of tyres.

Gregorio Lavilla, WSBK Executive Director, explained in a press release: ‘Phillip Island is renowned for its thrilling, high-speed layout, but it also presents unique challenges due to its surface and rapidly changing weather. Despite improvements to the track conditions over time, it remains extremely demanding, especially if you bear in mind it will be the first round of the season where teams are still fine-tuning their basic set-up. Based on our experience at Phillip Island, we concluded that enforcing a mandatory pit stop is the best approach to uphold the quality of the racing. By adopting this format, we’re ensuring that all participants can compete under fair and secure conditions at what promises to be an exciting start to the season’.

Adrián Huertas is making a surprising move in 2025, transitioning from the World Supersport Championship to the Moto2 World Championship. The typical path for a Supersport champion is to move up to the World Superbike Championship, but that is not the case here.

The Spaniard emphasized to the site Motosan.es that his ultimate goal is to enter MotoGP in the future, and he sees this as the ideal step: ‘What I really want is to reach MotoGP, and I think Moto2 is the best path to achieve it’.

Huertas revealed that there were no shortage of offers from WSBK: ‘There was a moment when it seemed like moving to Superbikes was a sure thing. I was close to joining that championship; I even received other offers, but the truth is I didn’t feel ready to wait any longer’.

His journey is unconventional, and financial constraints played a role, as he admitted: ‘I don’t come from a family with great resources. If I had money, I probably would have reached Moto3 earlier, but I feel very proud of what I have achieved through effort and hard work’.
