Tim Gajser was the undisputed force at the MXGP of Castilla La Mancha, claiming dominant victories in both races at Cózar during the second round of the MXGP World Championship.

On a mud-filled track, Gajser was untouchable in Race 1. The Slovenian Honda HRC rider led from start to finish, leaving his rivals no chance and finishing 43.251s (!) ahead. His teammate, Rubén Fernández, secured second place throughout the entire race.

The battle for third place lasted until the final laps, with Calvin Vlaanderen (Monster Energy Yamaha) overtaking Glenn Coldenhoff (Fantic) on lap nine of the 12-lap race.

Race 2 was almost a mirror image of the first in terms of leadership: Gajser never faltered, winning by 38.960s over Andrea Bonacorsi (Fantic). The Italian spent most of the race chasing teammate Coldenhoff before making a penultimate-lap overtake. Vlaanderen, however, struggled and finished 22nd.

In the overall standings, Gajser claimed victory with the maximum 50 points, followed by Coldenhoff with 38 points. Bonacorsi completed the podium with 35 points, while Fernández placed fourth with 31 points.

The YPF Infinia MXGP of Argentina, the first round of the 2025 MXGP World Championship, took place at the new Infinito Race Track circuit in Córdoba, attracting tens of thousands of fans. The new circuit offered an excellent setting for high-level racing in both categories, successfully replacing the former circuit of Villa La Angostura.

In the MXGP category, Maxime Renaux, former MX2 World Champion, returned to winning ways with Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP, achieving results of second and first in the two motos to reach his ninth GP victory and maintaining the red plate as championship leader. The new Aruba.it Ducati Factory MX Team impressed by claiming both Fox Holeshot Awards and finishing in 4th place overall with Mattia Guadagnini.

The podium was completed by former world champions Romain Febvre, who won the first moto for Kawasaki Racing Team, and Tim Gajser of Honda HRC, who started the season in typically strong fashion. In the MX2 class, current World Champion Kay de Wolf, of Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, claimed his ninth GP victory with results of 1st-5th, despite a crash in the second moto.

In the first full race of the new MXGP season, Jeremy Seewer claimed the first Fox Holeshot Award for Ducati, but Febvre took the lead right at the second corner, followed by Renaux. Gajser finished third, while Guadagnini achieved his best result in more than a year, finishing fourth. In the second moto, Guadagnini got the Holeshot, but Renaux quickly took the lead and maintained it until the end.

With this victory, Renaux achieves his first GP triumph since Switzerland in April 2023 and maintains the red leader plate on the Yamaha. The French victory drought of 2024 was broken right at the beginning of the new season, and French riders occupy the top two positions in the World Championship as the series returns to Europe for the second round. The track conditions, initially wet due to morning rain, dried quickly and provided a perfect setting for exciting racing.

The opening of the 2025 MXGP season took place in Villa La Angostura, Córdoba, Argentina, on a weekend marked by challenging weather conditions. After intense overnight rain, the track was initially muddy, which did not prevent Maxime Renaux from taking the overall victory, sharing the spotlight with Romain Febvre.

Race 1: Febvre dominates, Renaux secures second place.

Jeremy Seewer got the best start and took the holeshot, but was quickly overtaken by Romain Febvre and Maxime Renaux, who set a strong pace. Febvre, in great form with his Kawasaki, led comfortably, while Renaux seemed to be the only one capable of keeping up with his compatriot.

However, Renaux made a mistake by going off the track, which cost him precious time. Despite this, he managed to maintain second place, although Tim Gajser, who had a bad start, managed to recover ground and pressure him in the final laps. Renaux ended up resisting and secured second position.

Mattia Guadagnini was one of the highlights of the race by overtaking his Ducati teammate and finishing in a solid fourth place. Glenn Coldenhoff had a difficult start, but made an excellent recovery to finish in fifth position. Ducati placed two bikes in the top 6, with Jeremy Seewer finishing sixth. Lucas Coenen, despite racing with pain, showed grit and crossed the finish line in seventh place.

Race 2: Renaux unstoppable.

Maxime Renaux left no chances in the second race, starting in the lead and maintaining a strong pace to the checkered flag. With an impeccable performance, he left his opponents behind and secured victory without contest.

Romain Febvre, who took some time to overtake Guadagnini, ended up consolidating second place, but without any chance of catching Renaux. Tim Gajser, once again, managed to recover positions after a mediocre start and secured third position, while Guadagnini repeated the excellent fourth place, concluding an impressive weekend in his debut with the Ducati GP.

Valentin Guillod shone by taking a production bike to fifth place, demonstrating great talent and consistency. Kevin Horgmo had a modest start, but progressed well to sixth position, while Lucas Coenen, visibly affected by pain, lost performance and finished eighth. Glenn Coldenhoff suffered a fall and had to settle for sixth overall on his Fantic.

With a convincing victory, Renaux takes the championship lead, but Febvre and Gajser showed that they have the pace to fight for the title. The season promises great excitement and the next round will be decisive to see who can impose their dominance in the championship.

After dominating the asphalt circuits, Ducati will now try to do the same off-road, and more specifically in the MXGP World Motocross Championship.

The official presentation took place this Tuesday, with the Aruba.it Ducati Factory MX Team unveiling the colors of the Desmo450 MX. Jeremy Seewer and Mattia Guadagnini will be the riders.

Throughout last year, preparations took place, with participation in the Italian Championship (in which Alessandro Lupino was champion) and in two rounds of the MXGP.

The highest expectations rest on Seewer, who since 2019 always finishes the championship among the top five and has already been three times runner-up in the premier class. Guadagnini, for his part, is one of Italy’s promising talents, entering his third full season in the MXGP.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing icon Jeffrey Herlings is working towards a competitive return to motocross and is in the final stages of rehabilitation following surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The five-time world champion and rider with the most wins in the history of the FIM Motocross World Championship is getting closer to his goal of returning to riding, testing and getting back in shape for the 2025 MXGP. At the age of 30, Herlings underwent an operation to correct the injury he suffered in the sands of Valkenswaard in October 2024, after a strong season in which he finished 3rd in the overall standings, with four grand prix wins and 15 podiums.

Since the medical procedure, the Dutchman (Red Bull KTM’s longest-serving rider, having joined the MXGP factory team in 2010) has been following the steps of rehabilitation and is now just a few weeks away from being able to ride his 2025 KTM 450 SX-F again.

Herlings won’t be able to ride with the rest of the team at the opening round of the season, the MXGP of Argentina, on March 2-3, but he will assess his pace and progress until he is ready to return to the MXGP starting gate, in his eighth attempt in the premier class and his 16th year as a world championship rider.

In a statement, the Dutch rider spoke about his recovery: ‘We’re on the right track. I can do everything except ride the bike. I can cycle, swim and cross train – and in a few weeks we should be back on track. 2024 wasn’t a great season, but it was reasonable; we had a lot of races, came close to the MXGP title, won a few GPs and finished with around 15 podiums. I wanted to start this year strongly, so this injury wasn’t ideal, but now my focus is on having a successful second half of the championship’.

He concluded: ‘It was a strange injury because, after the surgery, I didn’t feel much pain, but recovery takes time. I want to get back riding as soon as possible and join my Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team… but we need to wait a little longer. I have a great desire to compete again’.

Last Saturday, Palma de Mallorca hosted the FIM Awards gala, celebrating the 2024 world champions. Among the winners, Spain’s dominance was unmistakable.

Jorge Martín’s MotoGP World Championship title was the most prominent achievement, but he was far from being the only Spanish world champion this year.

In road racing, Spain claimed titles in the Supersport World Championship (Adrián Huertas), MotoE (Héctor Garzó), and JuniorGP (Álvaro Carpe).

In motocross, Jorge Prado secured the MXGP title, while Toni Bou added more trophies in X-Trial and TrialGP. Josep García triumphed in the EnduroGP, and Mireia Badia became the women’s EnduroGP champion. Additionally, Spain won the Trial des Nations title.

This success underscores Spain’s strong position across multiple motorcycling disciplines, a result of long-term efforts in rider development that have established the nation as one of the leading global powers in the sport.
